District of Columbia Public Records
Since 1874, the District of Columbia has been officially recording some vital records. Copies of the District of Columbia public records are available through a state-based search and may cost as much as $23 per record search. The fees vary according to the type of record you want. A personal check or money order made out to the District of Columbia Treasurer should be sent to the Vital Records Division of D.C. along with a copy of your own photo identification. In the District of Columbia, you’re not entitled to some vital records unless you have a “direct and tangible interest” in the information. You’ll need to prove that you’re a family member (mother, sister, father or brother) or the legal representative of a family member before you can gain access to the records.
